This presentation addresses the expected impacts on transit operations of automated and connected roadway vehicles in public transit service in the near, medium and long term. This presentation is an expansion of the presentation on automated buses given by Mr. Lott in the session focusing on the future of automated transit at the ASCE International Conference on Transportation & Development, June 2016.

Sam Lott maintains a dual affiliation with Texas Southern University (TSU) Center for Transportation Training and Research where he is an Associate Research Professor, and with Kimley-Horn and Associates where he continues as an on-call consultant following his retirement in September 2015.  His experience in transportation systems spans over 35 years in the planning and engineering of a large spectrum of conventional and advanced technologies projects.  His expertise is particularly well known in the fields of transit systems applying automation technology, and of operational planning and design of major intermodal terminals.  He has served on the ASCE Automated People Mover Standards Committee for over 20 years, and between 2002 and 2010 he served as the U.S. representative to IEC Working Group 45 which developed the international standard called IEC62267 Safety Requirements for Automated Urban Guided Transport.

Mr. Lott is currently serving as the designated Principal Investigator for the NCHRP 20-102(02) project titled “Impacts of Regulations and Policies on CV and AV Technology Introduction in Transit Operations”.  Working under the auspices of Texas Southern University, Mr. Lott is providing the technical leadership of the consultant team for which Kimley-Horn is the prime contractor with NAS/TRB.
